The project produces an audio coding format and software reference encoder/decoder (codec) for lossy audio compression. Vorbis is a free and open-source software project headed by the Xiph.Org Foundation. It produced smaller files equivalent or higher quality while retaining computational complexity comparable to other MDCT formats such as AAC or Windows Media Audio.ĪLLPlayer, VLC media player, Media Player Classic, MPlayer, RealPlayer, Winamp. Vorbis had been shown to perform significantly better than many other lossy audio formats in the past. In addition, audio in WAV files can be encoded in various audio coding formats, such as GSM or MP3, to reduce the file size. Though a WAV file can contain compressed audio, the most common WAV audio format is uncompressed in the linear pulse code modulation (LPCM) format. Vorbis is most commonly used in conjunction with the Ogg container format, and it is therefore often referred to as Ogg Vorbis.

The usual bitstream encoding is the linear pulse-code modulation (LPCM) format. It is the main format used on Windows systems for raw and typically uncompressed audio. Waveform Audio File Format is a Microsoft and IBM audio file format standard for storing an audio bitstream on PCs.
